Fastlinks - The Middle-Aged Brain, The Grown-Up Brain, How To Change Your Mind

My favorite topic today - the plasticity of the brain. Apparently I am a lot smarter and cognizant than I thought.

Good news - our congitive skills actually get better as we age and our daydreaming triggers more often. Hmmm...that seems so contrary but clinical testing proves that even though we falter with names and daydreaming our brains are actually pretty sharp. That's reassuring!

The Secret Life of the Grown-up Brain: The Surprising Talents of the Middle-Aged MindThe Secret Life of the Grownup Brain.

You do have the power to snap out of bad thoughts.

Mixed results in clinical trials don't completely prove or disprove that supplements can aid the brain.

Fastlinking - Tarot, Sound, Vibration and the Brain

Hello --

Sound, hearing and vibration are core ideas in tarot. The Hierophant represents the concept of inner hearing or knowing--the still small voice that rises up inside. This is not the flattering voice or the astral chatter but a calm true feeling or knowing.

Because this is such a strong principle in tarot I track outer information that underscores how this process may work in the brain and body. Here are some fastlinks to the places I have been this week.

PBS has a new documentary titled 'The Music Instinct: Science and Song. Here's a review of last night's viewing. The show does ramble a bit but covers a broad range of disciplines and their connection to sound, vibration and the brain. Evelyn Glennie and Bobby McFerrin are included in the show.

If you have never heard of Evelyn Glennie you need to know about her. She's been deaf since birth and she's an incredible musician--percussionist. Her ability to speak is empowering. Here's a link to Evelyn Glennie's TED conference appearance.

Change Is A Good Thing - Weekly Tarot Horoscopes

August 20 - August 26

Friend or Foe
Change is good. New shoes, groceries and gas for the car are good too. Watching a Netflix movie is good. Keeping the bathroom and the kitchen clean is good too. Did I mention that change is good? Finding a new place for Saturday lunch is good. Getting a pay increase is even better. Receiving a pay cut may mean it is time to change jobs and change our thinking and make things better for ourselves. So why do we think change is bad? Why does everyone have such a problem with change?

Do we think we need to gain something in order for change to be good? Do we fear death and so any change that occurs is an indication that death is imminent, that things might not be as they appear? Do we perceive that no gain for us means change is detrimental in some way? Maybe change just means we haven’t been paying attention, like a friendly reminder that life works in cycles.

Question
I don’t have any answers this week, just questions about why change is such a block for us. And this thought: Change is only bad if you think of it that way, even in the worst of circumstances.

I’ve spent the last week in training mode, learning new things about my job and discovering my connections to a whole new generation of people and new friends. I’ve had several readings for others that stumped me and accusations that astounded me. All of it has got me thinking a lot about change. Oh yes, and it probably has something to do with studying in depth a card that often causes people to shudder when it shows up in a reading.

Making New Images
Change/Transformation requires our self-conscious to adjust and/or make new images and image making is a strange bedfellow. It does not begin with seeing with the eyes so much as with seeing internally. It is fed by sound, smell, taste, touch and knowing. Then it is fed by actual sight, if you are blessed with that gift. It has more to do with needs and feelings and desire than it has with objects and money and power. Image making has everything to do with change because in order to achieve those images we must be willing to aggressively make and accept change in our lives.

So if you don’t like change you can give me yours. I like quarters and half-dollars the best.

My Life As A Tarot Reader - Are We Getting It Right??

Some thoughts to contemplate:

Source is with us all the time. This is something that the competitive world would like for you to believe is not so but they are wrong. We are in constant connection with source.

Keep this idea in mind - When you hear yourself complain that the Universe (source, God, the force, or what ever you want to call it) is just not giving you what you want and has abandoned you could it be the other way around? If you are the constant in every problem you identify, then you are the fly in the ointment and you are the one that needs to make some changes. The Universe is doing its job. Are you doing yours?

To hear and commune with source means understanding what source sounds like and feels like and looks like. That is the personal part of our journey because each one of us will hear and see it differently. It requires time and focus and searching for the tools that will work for you.

Knowing this does not mean that you remove yourself from the rest of the world. On the contrary, we are citizens of this world as well and must make the effort to forge a connection(s) as that is part of growth. Life demands growth and it will create it according to what images and thinking we give it.

Viewing the World card and the Sun Card can reinforce the images for understanding this further. In the mean time, don’t ever give up; just find another way. If you are one of those people that consistently fail then it means you are repeating a pattern that does not work for you. Try a new one.

Fast Linking - Things That Intrigue Me

I was intrigued today by:

An interview with the artist Richard Serra on Charlie Rose. He talked about his work and his thinking being related to "how the body measures space through movement and time." Here are a few links for you:

This is a google image search on Richard Serra. Try imagining your body being the steel shapes Serra creates.

The reason for the the interview is his 40 year retrospective at MOMA. This is a online flash version of the exhibit. It takes you all over the museum but if you have a slow computer you might want to skip it.

This one really blew my mind (I think there is a pun here but I'm not quite sure.) Did you know walking can increase the size of your brain? Not to mention sharpen your memory and attention span! Type "your brain in charge" in my new search box to the left and see what else you can find.

More Brain power here. Kids sites are the best for the basics!

Want To Make Real Change? Stop Making These 5 Mistakes

The book THE SECRET has really gotten a lot of mixed attention. Many rave about it and others scoff and even those that actually try it and have some level of success just can’t seem to wrap their whole minds around the concept of getting what you want by changing your thinking; they think their success was a fluke or a coincidence. My own review acknowledges some of the shortcomings and fallacies in THE SECRET.

In my own interpretation, the Law of Attraction simply states - you are what you believe you are. You are what you think and therefore you create and attract exactly whatever you focus on and give action to. You can change the circumstances of your life simply by changing your thinking.

Now that a span of time has elapsed since I reviewed the book, I thought it might be helpful to revisit the idea of the Law of Attraction by outlining the top 5 stumbling blocks you can face when you begin to acknowledge and use the Law. I have dealt with these stumbling blocks personally and with clients in my tarot practice.

Belief Systems - Are you aware of what your belief systems are? Are you aware how they help you or how they might hinder you in the pursuit of creating your perfect life? If your belief systems require you to focus in a negative manner about yourself or what you can accomplish, you probably need to make some personal changes. A false premise creates a false result and so if you are still dragging around your parent’s or society’s beliefs maybe it's time to get your own.

Mental Control - Your mind wanders, it is very good about creating scenarios and playing on your fears, it doesn't want to obey. In order to gain better control it is necessary to find a way to quiet the mind, to slow it down, to give it a rest. Examine your habits and replace anything that is feeding your mind garbage - limit your viewing of television, violence, and the nightly news. Try a breathing practice, a movement practice, yoga, meditation, simple stretching or a form of thought focus. Give yourself a mantra to focus on when your mind starts creating its crazy monkey antics. "I can" is a great one.

Action - You can focus all you want but if you don't take action nothing will change. If you want to make a lot of money and you sit on your ass at home and focus and visualize, at some point the creditors are going to show up and take away everything you've got. You'll be sitting on the street corner begging before you know it and “dishing” the Law of Attraction. Why? Because you took no action and action is required. Without action it's just wishing.

Discernment - People who don't listen well make lousy observers. People who are unable to observe will never reason well. You must be able to listen and observe if you are going to use the Law of Attraction to your advantage because you must be able to reason and impose order especially on your mind. If you are reasoning well then a false premise has little chance of getting into the mix. So stop talking and observe the world and people around you more.

Silence - This, in my opinion, is the ultimate key to using attraction and getting what you want but it is a huge stumbling block for many people. It seems to stem from the need to please and to let everyone know what you are doing. Both reasons need to get tossed out the window. People have a tendency to destroy anything that appears threatening to them for a variety of reasons but mostly because of fear so don't tell people what you are doing. They don't need to know you are using mantras or meditating, or creating an incredible life for yourself.

By using silence as a tool you will more easily discern your belief systems. You will know better what action to take. You will gain a new level of control over your mental processes. You will become a better listener and observer.

Puzzled? You aren't the only one!

February 19 - Febraury 25, 2007
Fluidity, the flowing nature of the substance of life – next time you get stopped up with an issue and are unable to let it go (granted some things must be worked through and do take time) consider how it fits into your personal puzzle. We each have themes and attributes that are ours to work through and issues to grapple with. The idea being that when we figure out how to make something work and we have perfected the process of making something “happen” in our lives or in assisting the lives of others that information is available to the whole of life through the subconscious. The subconscious is a gateway to information – often referred to as the Akashic records. Every experience we have had (experience also includes imagery and color, smell, taste, sound, etc.) that registers an impression on our being is recorded by the body and into the records of the subconscious. We have a personal portion of the subconscious we each work with and then we have the universal subconscious (you know the one that fights wars and creates governments). Remember we are evolving every moment and at the same time balancing in the cycles of life. The key to successfully working with the subconscious is to discipline the mind. I will be posting a reading list in the near future. In the mean time here are some links to several great books that can help organize and discipline the mind.
